How to choose the motor for RC car  [05/23/2017]

As the one of the essential component of the power system, motor plays an important role in RC model’s performance. However, we always have so many problems. Which one could determine the motor performance and how to choose the suitable motor for RC car? Now all these questions we can give the answers. Take the Tomcat vehicle series DC brushless inner motor of Detrum as an example to introduce in detail.

High quality material and excellent design
The motor is made of hard anodized aluminum casing and uses 240℃ R-leveled insulated winding, its explosion-proof rotor structure has 200℃ high temperature resistance, the imported bearings are high precision and strength. Owing to these features, the motor has excellent tolerance of heat and remarkable performance.

One-piece structure which has dust proof feature can prolong the service life of motor.

The slot for conducting heat on motor casing and the silicone pad which is between the end cover and stator can dissipate the inner heat and effectively reduce the possibility of damage.

The Wind Fire wheel design of the front & rear covers reflects the pursuit of strong power and reduces the motor weight.

High Efficiency, Remarkable Performance
Effectively this percentage shows how much of the electricity drawn by the motor is actually used to create movement in the model, so greater efficiency means less heat and less waste. Tomcat vehicle series motor has an efficiency rate of up to 90%, which could bring the better experience.

Security Assurance with Reliability
Have special separation preventing patent technology for magnet in high speed brushless motors. It could give an extra carbon fiber sheet for magnet to avoid the separation other than using dedicated glue.

Pre-soldered Connectors, Plug and Play
Tomcat vehicle series motors all solders the motor wires to guarantee the stable connection between the ESC and motor.

How to choose the suitable motor for your RC car?

Depend on KV rating
The model usually provide the appropriate motor specification for vehicle drivers, then choose the suitable motor KV rating depend on how highly you value your model’s top speed compared to how much you care about sharp, powerful acceleration. With the same motor power, a higher KV rating means a higher top speed, while a lower KV rating means powerful torque but a lower top speed. Choosing the motor of higher KV rating will be better for on-road/racing –focused model, whereas a lower one will be better for larger or more off-road/sport-focused model. For example, as for the Tomcat 3660 motor in 1:10, you could use the KV 4000 for on-road/racing –focused model or use the KV3200 for off-road/sport-focused model.

Depend on size
In addition, you need to consider the motor size. First, it is better for you to understand the connection between size and its name. For example, the motor named Tomcat CAR-4074-KV1400 means the outer diameter is 40mm and height is 74mm.
Second, different motor size will suit for different model. Like the 4068/4074/4092 are mostly used in 1:8 RC car.
Last, the installation space in model frame is always most important. The motor with too larger diameter or length can’t be used.

Depend on ESC continuous current
Motor, as the part of the power system, need to be compatible with the ESC. So the burst current of motor which usually means the maximum current cannot over the ESC’s continuous current. For example, Tomcat CAR-3625-KV4300, this motor’s burst current reaches 45A. You should choose an ESC with a continuous current greater than 45A.
